Memorable Moments of the 2009-2010 NBA Season So Far
There have been quite a few ups and downs in the world of basketball this season. This season has been an interesting one with plenty going on in the way of performance and with player news.
I’m going to talk about the highlights of the 09-10 season. I will talk about both the good and the bad that we have seen so far.
Two teams seem to have appeared from nowhere and stand out due to the fact that last season they were nobodies but this season they have become very successful and are building themselves a decent reputation with every game they play.
The first of the two teams to mention is the Oklahoma City Thunder. No one imagined that they might become this successful in such a short space of time. The team can thank Kevin Durant for helping them to rise out so quickly from being one of the worst teams to being a successful team this season.
The second team that seemed to arise from nowhere is The Memphis Grizzlies. These guys are simply shocking, as unlike the Oklahoma City Thunder, people had no idea that this team would ever make it into the season.
This team has now seen some great play on the court due to the team work of Rudy Gay, Marc Gasol, OJ Mayo and Zach Randolph and as a result may even end up making the playoffs.
However, the incident at the Gilbert Arenas really brought down the reputation and image of the league itself with guns being pointed at teammates, the Washington Guard has now been suspended for the rest of the season.
But on the up side, some up and coming hopefuls have risen up like Tyreke Evans amongst others. Guys like these provide a bit of optimism for the future of basketball, so it can’t all be bad.

Top NBA Prospects For 2010
March Madness has ended, and so to have the college careers of many of its most talented participants. Several underclassmen (with more to follow) have already declared for the NBA Draft in June. Of course, some will change their minds and head back to school after receiving information on their potential draft positions.
Here is my list of the top ten prospects for the 2010 NBA draft (list excludes international players):
1. John Wall, PG, Kentucky – The Kentucky point guard tops almost every 2010 mock draft out there. His combination of size, athleticism, and explosiveness are off the charts at his position. Wall also possesses versatility and incredible basketball instincts. The SEC Player of the Year – Wall is still very raw with much room for growth. His ceiling at the next level is unlimited where he’ll be unstoppable if he develops a reliable jump shot. Wall gets the nod over my #2 prospect – Evan Turner – because point guards with his type of ability don’t come around too often.
2. Evan Turner, SG, Ohio St. – In my opinion Turner is hands down the most ready of the 2010 NBA prospects. There’s not much this 6’6″ shooting guard can’t do on the court as evidenced by his 20-9-6 average this season. Turner has prototypical NBA shooting guard size to go along with his uncanny versatility and court savvy. He may not be in the explosive mold of Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant, but he is more than capable of scoring 20 plus while displaying the all around game that made him the player of the year in college basketball this season.
3. DeMarcus Cousins, PF/C, Kentucky – Of the post players in this year’s draft, Cousins is the most ready to contribute right away. He has an NBA body, excellent post footwork, soft hands and great touch around the basket. Early issues with attitude and maturity would seem to be a thing of the past as Cousins emerged as the most consistent weapon on a Kentucky team full of NBA prospects. If Cousins can answer questions about his work ethic and defense he could be a dominant post player in the NBA for a long time.
4. Derrick Favors, PF/C, Georgia Tech – Favors was rivaled only by Wall in fanfare coming out of high school. While Wall flourished at Kentucky, Favors’ season was somewhat of a disappointment. He showed flashes of his elite talent but struggled with consistency all season long. In Favors defense, the guard play at Tech was downright atrocious at times this season – especially their ability to feed the post and create opportunities for a very talented frontline. Fortunately for Favors, his physical tools ate tailor made for the pro game. His athleticism and explosiveness around the basket can’t be matched by the other big men in this draft.
5. Wesley Johnson, G/F, Syracuse – The 6’7″ junior is a lengthy athlete who can defend a multitude of positions. Johnson will be 23 by the time NBA training camps open for the 2010-2011 season which makes him the most mature of the top NBA prospects. He has a solid stroke from the outside and is a very good rebounder at his position. His ball-handling and ability to create off the dribble will need to improve though.
6. Al-Farouq Aminu, SF/PF, Wake Forest – Very long forward who went from just a raw athlete with potential to a more skilled offensive player this season. While his face to the basket game showed great improvement there is still a ways to go. Incredible wing span and excellent lateral movement make Aminu a potential defensive nightmare for offensive players at the next level.
7. Greg Monroe, PF/C, Georgetown – Monroe is an incredibly skilled big man with soft hands and solid footwork. He is a great passer from the post and really seems to have a great feel for the game. On the downside, Monroe is not particularly athletic and motivation can be an issue. Can also use some work on his weak hand.
8. Ed Davis, PF, North Carolina – After showing great promise as a freshman for a National Champion, expectations were high for Davis as a returning sophomore. Unfortunately, the season was a disappointment for both Davis and his Tarheels. His offensive game is still quite limited as he is mostly a finisher around the rim. He will need to expand his offensive repertoire greatly, but the ability is undeniable.
9. Xavier Henry, SG, Kansas – Most mock drafts have his teammate – Cole Aldrich going ahead of him at this point. But I like Henry’s ideal NBA 2-guard size and stroke from the outside. He will definitely need to imrove his ability to score off the dribble but he will be very effective coming off screens. Explosiveness may not be ideal for a SG but he possesses enough athleticism to get the job done.
10. Ekpe Udoh, PF/C, Baylor – Udoh came on strong in his junior campaign as he lead Baylor to the Elite 8. Has great potential as a defensive player with superior shot blocking ability. Offensive skill set is still emerging, but has quite a bit of promise as a post scorer.

Put Your Game Face On – It’s Time For the 2010 NBA Playoffs!
Where were you last April 18?
… and where will you be until mid-June?
For every NBA enthusiast out there, it’s quite obvious that these dates mean the most to you, especially if your supported team has already clinched a playoff berth.
The Western Conference has their spots locked and ready for a rumble. Los Angeles, Dallas, Denver, Utah, Phoenix, Oklahoma City (first-time!), San Antonio (13th straight time!), and Portland are proud to be included in that list.
Rounding up the Eastern Conference, Cleveland (with home-court advantage throughout the playoffs), Orlando, Atlanta, Boston, Miami, Milwaukee, and Charlotte are sounding like sure picks, with Toronto and Chicago battling it out for the last seed as of this writing.
As the 2010 NBA Playoffs blooms in the horizon, it’s but natural for the “average hardcore” fan to support his or her chosen team’s pursuit of the much coveted championship banner this postseason.
Tickets are already being sold like hotcakes, and along with that, the latest NBA gear as well.
There’s nothing like strutting out the streets with your own Boston Celtics Backpack (if you’re a fan of “The Truth” or “The Big Ticket”) and believing that they still have what it takes to reclaim the throne and get Banner #18 as their own.
Or as an alternative, if you live in the west coast somewhere in a place called “Kobe-ville” and know in your heart that his team’s gonna go for back-to-back championships this year, why not consider an L.A. Lakers Backsack to guide you in the journey ahead? (Note: it’s a rough ride for the defending champs as they just might have to go through an elite and experienced team on every stage of the playoff run.)
If I were a kid down in Cleveland or Miami, I’d sure love to see myself not just in a position to see LeBron or D-Wade face to face, but also wear my NBA Junior Jersey Backpack to let them know I’m one with them.
This April 18, make a statement. Make your team proud. Show the faith you have in them. Give the love that they deserve.

The Biggest Stories of the 09-10 NBA Season
It’s been a very interesting season so far in the basketball world. With many unexpected twists and turns, fans have been pleasantly surprised with some great performances, in addition to some disappointing news with respect to other players.
Let’s look at some of the highlights of the 09-10 basketball season thus far. We’ll cover some good, as well as some bad here.
The first thing we should recognize is some of the teams that have come out of nowhere and established themselves as very respectable basketball teams. There are two that stand out to me more than any others, and these were both two of the worst teams in the league last season.
First is the Oklahoma City Thunder, a team that people believed had a bright future but never thought they would be competitive this quickly. Thanks to superstar Kevin Durant, the team has suddenly morphed from one of the worst in the league to one with a winning record this season.
The Memphis Grizzlies may be an even bigger surprise. While people knew that the Thunder had the potential to be a good team, everyone had written off Memphis entering the season.
Thanks to some great play from Marc Gasol, Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, and OJ Mayo, this is a team playing some very inspired basketball. They may even make the playoffs.
On the negative side of things, there was the Gilbert Arenas incident that marred the image of the league. Having been caught in the locker room pointing a gun at the teammate, the Washington guard was suspended for the rest of the year and pleaded guilty to felony charges.
It hasn’t been all bad in the world of basketball players though. Take the emergence of a few top rookies like Tyreke Evans, Brandon Jennings, and others, all of who have proven that the league is full of promise with respect to the years that lie ahead.

LeBron’s Greatness Lacks One Accomplishment
No one can deny that LeBron James is one of the greatest basketball players in the NBA, whether he is the best ever is open to debate.
It’s obvious that the younger basketball fans idolize James, and consider him the best that there has ever been. A few good seasons do not a fabulous career make, so it’s far too early to say that he’s the best ever.
He has played in the league for a few seasons now, and has undoubtedly done well, but he has yet to win a prestigious championship ring. Winning the NBA championship greatly adds to the prestige of a player and gives clout to a claim that they are the best.
The exiting news has emerged that Shaq is now helping LeBron to improve his game and take that elusive prize. There is no doubt that James will improve greatly under the influence of this legend.
LeBron must be feeling that having Shaq on the same side will greatly improve his chances of claiming that ring this year.
I’m sure we would all like to see LeBron and co. lift the championship, and it would go along way to erasing the terrible memories of last season’s playoffs? Remember that crushing from Orlando Magic? Yes so do I, all too clearly. Will having Shaq on the court make all the difference? Well all we can do is wait and see really.
I would love to see LeBron and Shaw lift that title, and it would go a long way towards the claims that James is the best. However, he still has a lot of seasons to go yet in his career, and maybe is a few years time he will have earned that accolade, but he isn’t there yet.
Whoever wins what this season, we are in for a good one. LeBron will no doubt further improve as the effect of Shaq rubs off on him.

2008 Top Ten Teams in the NBA
Here is my list of the top ten teams in the NBA 2008-09. season.
1. Boston Celtics: The returning championship team, these guys now know what it takes to get to the finals and come out victorious. Their record so far is just as impressive, they are 20-2. They could break the Chicago Bulls record of 72-10 if they keep up that pace. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Rondo, Allen, Cassell, so much talent it’s unbelievable.
2. Cleveland Cavaliers: Lebron James is hungry for a championship ring. Whether he does it with Cleveland, or eventually New York, he will eventually get one. He has that essence that Jordan had where you knew he would accomplish his goals. He has more talent around him this year and is doing very well. He is averaging 26.7 points a game right now. Lebron deserves his first MVP this year as his team would be 4-16 without him most likely at this point.
3. L.A. Lakers: What better rival to Boston than L.A.? It carries on the legacy of guys like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson among others. These guys are looking just as hard to beat as last year if not more. Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum are playing stellar this year. Their record is 17-3 and they are on a good pace to possible break the 72-10 mark as well. Kobe is averaging 24.9 points and might get MVP again.
4. Denver Nuggets: Now that they have Chauncey Billups they seem more revitalized. They play transition offense and defense much better and get the key plays. Clutch shooting is no problem now that Billups is here to save them. They could make one of their deepest playoff runs ever this year.
5. Portland Trailblazers: Talk about young talent. They have Brandon Roy, Greg Oden, LaMarcus Aldrige, Steve Blake, and Channing Frye. That is probably the youngest team I’ve seen in a while. While it will take time for Oden to develop and harness his skills, this team is an all out threat. Brandon Roy is having one of his best seasons averaging 20 points a game.
6. Orlando Magic: Dwight Howard is trying to end the season with the highest average of rebounds a game. Oh yeah he already is achieving that for the most part. He is getting 21 point and 14.5 rebounds per game. He is a player every team would love to have. On top of that they have Rashard Lewis, a big threat all around, as well as Turkoglu who can drain if from three land whenever he is called upon.
7. New Orleans Hornets: Now that they have some playoff experience, watch out! With a deadly guard in Chris Paul and a terrific finisher in Tyson Chandler the Hornets will hurt you everywhere. They also have Peja Stojakovic for when they need a clutch three. They are lacking in front court depth and don’t have the best back up for Chris Paul. Other than that they look to do some more damage this year in the post season.
8. Houston Rockets: Talk about great depth, Tracy McGrady is hurt again, yet that doesn’t stop the Rockets. They are 14-8 so far. They are definitely a sleeper team that could shock a lot of people. I know it sounds cliche but once Yao Ming and T-Mac are back in force, it will be on for the race in the SouthWest division.
9. Dallas Mavericks: A very rocky start for the Mavericks, but they are starting to turn it around. They are beating the teams that they should so far. But they need to show they can beat the Cavs, Lakers, and Celtics of the NBA world. Cause if they don’t, making the playoffs really won’t matter if you lose in round one again.
10. San Antonio Spurs: Losing Tony Parker was a big blow to the team earlier in the season. They are fighting back now that they have him, and have a 12-8 record so far which is on par for the upper ten percent of teams. Parker is still not his old self just yet as his stats are way below his norm.

The NBA’s Best in the West
Coming into this season there were obvious picks for the next Western Conference champion like the defending champion San Antonio Spurs who are always a contender, the Dallas Mavericks who will be looking to avenge the early loss in the first round last season and the Phoenix Suns that added veteran Grant Hill to their lineup in the off season. Although all of these teams are still on pace to be best in the West, there are a few unexpected surprises in the West this season.
There are three teams in the Western Conference that continue to amaze and improve as the season progresses: Los Angeles Lakers, New Orleans Hornets and Portland Trailblazers
The Portland Trailblazers came into the season on a sour note with their number one pick Greg Oden having season-ending surgery before he could even play his first game in a Blazer uniform. That kind of took the wind out of their sails coming out of the gate, but not for long as their young superstar Brandon Roy put his team on his back and rallied the troops to a very impressive start with the promise of a playoff spot come June.
The New Orleans Hornets have to be the biggest surprise out of these three as rookie of the year Chris Paul has become a real leader and on of the top point guards in the NBA just behind Steve Nash and Jason Kidd. If the playoffs started today, the New Orleans Hornets would be the number one seed in the West, pretty amazing considering they were no where near making the post season last year.
Then we come to the never ending saga of the Los Angeles Lakers who have been the NBA’s equivalent of a drama filled soap opera all off season long with questions and trade rumors about the NBA’s best player in Kobe Bryant. Even though the Lakers’ future looked very dismal and eminent for disaster when the season began, somehow, someway Kobe Bryant and company were able to pull it all together and become one of the league’s best teams with most of the credit going to up and coming center Andrew Bynum who is looking more and more like the future of the Lakers and the next great center in the NBA.
Who will come out on top in the Western Conference? Who knows, but one thing is for sure, as the season moves closer to the playoffs, basketball fans are in for a treat as it is looking more competitive than ever in the West!
